Hey CX Freaks,

If anyone is interested, I've been posting my race reports from this season on my tribe blog - you can find them here:

http://people.tribe.net/61e8e002-fc96-40bb-b62a-503a7d9c75e1/blog?_click_path=Application%5Btribe%5D.Tribe%5Baa7d4768-7379-47db-9d93-b61e9610d767%5D

It's been a learning experience this year in the Bs, after having raced Cs in my first year last year...The good news is that I seem to be improving with each race!

An American 'cross revolution

News feature: February 13, 2007
An American 'cross revolution
The US Cyclo-cross team stunned the world by taking three silver medals at the world championships this year. While remarkable, the medals won in this year's 'cross worlds weren't the first big results for the US in cyclo-cross. In 1999, Matthew Kelly won the gold in the junior men's race and Tim Johnson took bronze in the Espoirs. The next year Walker Ferguson took silver in the juniors, and the women have been competitive for years - Alison Dunlap and Ann Knapp scored top ten finishes for several years. Does this year's haul signal a new era in American cyclo-cross? Racer and writer, Peter Hymas, explores the potential for a US 'cross explosion.

Well I did it, I went to and raced in Europe. I wish I could say that it was the best trip EVER! But, it was mostly cold and sandy and I got pretty much hosed when it came to a start posistion. Try dead last! They call it a random lottery for your posistion, but it really did seem like all the "euros" were in the front while all the "Amerikaner's" were in the back of the pack!

After a hectic start of about 70-80 guy's, I made my way through the field the best I could and tried not to fall over too many times, although many more people were falling down in front of me, mainly in the sand pits. Of course when you fall in the sand, your drive train gets totally jammed with super fine sand and you have no shifting for at least a lap. That sucked. I ended up finishing 45th out of 60+, bot great, but iguess not horrible either.

Anyway, I won't say it totally sucked, but let's just say I'm not sure I'll do it again. Amsterdam on the other hand.........

Straight Outta Compton: Cyclo-cross seasonings

By Katie Compton (Spike Shooter)
This report filed January 9, 2007
Well so far it's been quite the eventful cyclo-cross season. Racing the UCI events, having the bikes stolen, the wonderful support I received from sponsors and friends, a new sponsor (sort of, more on that later) and something that I still can't believe actually happened, a dry, fast cyclo-cross nationals in Providence, Rhode Island! While racing in the mud can be a lot of fun, I've decided the dry fast courses are much better as I've become a bit delicate after living in Colorado. I really enjoyed not having to wash the chamois three times afterwards, and waking up the next morning without dirt in my eyes.
Brian Vernor first caught the cycling world's attention with his 2004 film "Pure, Sweet Hell," which showcased the witty, hard-driven men and women of the domestic cyclo-cross scene . This year Vernor again focused his lens on the 'cross community, this time in the form of a photography project. Vernor followed the entire 2006 Crankbrothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclo-cross from Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Portland, Oregon, snapping portraits of 'crossers, fans and industry personalities in his makeshift tent booth along the way.

The final race of the 2006 BASP series (also district championships for all the "A" cats)!

Coming into this final race, my series point totals had me sittting in 5th place overall, so I was hoping to maintain or improve my overall standings with a good race. Consistency counts for something in these races I guess - even though my best placing at any single race was 5th, my worst placing was 11th, so I was able to get call-ups and earn points by finishing consistently in the top 10. Other riders had placed better than me in some races, but then finished mid-pack in others...I managed to get through the season with no flats or mechanicals or major crashes, which is enough to be thankful for!

Anyway, the night before this final race I was out late at a show at the Fillmore (friend's birthday - duty calls, you know!) Needless to say I didn't get the sleep I wanted, but it didn't seem to impact me too much. It was another clear crisp day (so much for cyclocross being a muddy/snowy/sloppy sport - well, at least not in NorCal at this time of year - every single BASP race was sunny and dry). I got down to Coyote Point using City Car Share (which I highly recommend for anyone looking to go car free), warmed up, got one nice slow lap in on the course to see all the sketchy corners, and then did some quick sprints before heading over to the start. The start wasn't as furious as some of the other races, and in fact the first lap overall wasn't all that fast - I was able to stick with the lead group of 3 guys, and about 7 or 8 of us pulled away from the main field right away. I sat close behind the leaders through the first lap, but they opened a gap on me soon after the second lap began. This course was by far the longest of any in the series - lap times were over 9 minutes, and that was despite a heavy dose of pavement.

Coyote Point made for a really a fun course with only one real climb, plus some tricky loose downhill corners that saw several riders hit the dirt, a fun single-track descent, and of course the brutal run along the beach... Although the beach run seemed ridable, I decided I'd rather not risk botching it, so I shouldered the bike and ran in the soft gravel-sand. One thing didn't change on any lap: by the time I would reach the end of the sand (which sucked the life right out of my legs), jumping on the bike and accelerating was pure hell! I had a pretty smooth race technically, was able to gain some time in the technical parts of the course where other riders were tripping up, but unfortunately I didn't have the legs to hammer on the straight aways - and whatever gains I made elsewhere were lost when other riders would accelerate away from me on the long paved sections. It was clear that several other riders were hoping to claw there way onto the podium - we almost seemed to get faster as the race went on. My only wish was that I had caught the wheel of somebody so I could have duked it out at the line - instead I ended up cruising in alone, in 7th place...which moved me up to 4th in the overall series standings. Good enough for a bag of schwag from the Pilarcitos folks!

So that does it for my first year of cyclocross. I may jump into a late race or two, but the BASP series was my main focus, and I must say it was a helluva good time. The races have a great vibe, the people are fun, the courses are pure urban genius, and the adrenaline rush gets me through the work week. In August I had never really ridden a bike off-road, and now it's December and I managed to get my ass in gear and build up a bike, learned the basics of the sport, and had some decent race placings. It's pretty addicting, and I fully intend to be racing the Bs next fall. Now it's time to get ready for snow season, and perhaps some crit races in the spring...

BASP GGP Race Report (C Men)

Amazingly, my inaguaral cross season is nearing its end - this was to be the 4th of 5 in the BASP series. After placing 11th, 8th, and 6th in the first 3, I was hoping to break the into the top 5 in this race - especially with many of my friends coming out in the early morning to GGP to watch some hometown racing action. The C Men field was HUGE - 90 riders lined up - obviously lots of folks were out to give cyclocross a try for the first time...

I spent one night after work this week practicing my starts and (dis)/mounts - which I think really paid off come race day. I was smooth all day through the barrier sections, and I had a great start - blasted off the line and was leading coming off the pavement into the first turn. The only problem with this was that I showed up a bit late to register, leaving little time to scout the course (I only got to complete one half lap of warm-up)...so I was leading the race, but a little blindly. Soon enough I was passed by 1,2,3 guys. The field strung out behind us, the pace was fast, the course was in perfect condition for hammering - soft, but not muddy, lots of packed singletrack, some tight turns, and not a single run-up! I rode as smoothly as I could've hoped, and maintained my position throughout the first 4 laps. Some folks from the RideOn crew screaming my name certainly helped on more than one occasison! Coming into lap 5, I was surprised to hear the officials calling out "Bell Lap!" - I felt like we hadn't been racing very long (and sure enough, our race ended well short of 40 minutes), and so I dug deep, knowing I was somewhere in or near the top 5, and wanting desperately to maintain my spot.

On the last lap, I was able to make a move after the single barrier section, passed the guy who I had played cat-n-mouse with for much of the race (he was a bit stronger than me, but I was better in the technical spots), and then put my head down and gave it all I had for the remainder of the lap. I lost focus on one turn, and slid out a bit, my handlebars catching with the guy I had passed earlier - he slipped by as I had to unclip to prevent going down...another rider got by me too, and I was determined to go after him. I gave it everything I had coming up the long hill to the double barriers. One rider in front of me went down just beyond the barriers, and I was able to avoid him and hit the pavement more or less alone. I charged to the line for 5th place - finally a podium spot! By far my best race of the season...hopefully I can improve just a bit more for the BASP finale in Coyote Point.

An interview with Tim Johnson, November 23, 2006

Tim Johnson is one of the serious players in the cyclo-cross world, often seen passionately enjoying the winter on his 'cross bike after a season of road racing. The American is always at the business end of the races, making him the perfect rider to talk to about the growing 'cross scene in the United States. Cyclingnews' Gregor Brown spoke with Tim Johnson (Cannondale/cyclocrossworld.com) as he was in the Northwest preparing for his final two USGP races.

I have to say I'm more than a little pumped up for this Sunday's race in Golden Gate Park!

Although this is not the final race of the series (Coyote Point 12/03/06), it may very well be the most exciting. This will be the third time in recent history that cyclocross has come to Golden Gate Park, but the first time that saw any significant rain fall prior to race day. This (in my opinion) will make it that much more fun, as well challenging!

I can't wait.

If you don't have plans for this Sunday, bring your friends and family and watch the most exciting hour of cycling you'll ever see!

BASP McLaren Race Report (C Men)

Given that cross is a fall/winter sport and that my immune system is not stellar, this was bound to happen at one of the races....the dreaded head/chest cold! It started on Thursday, and by race time Sunday morning it was in full swing. I had theraflu and advil for breakfast, and that seemed to work wonders- I felt surprisingly strong during the race! The McLaren park course was my favorite of the BASP series so far - a killer runup, some nasty climbs, fun fast descents, and some super tight technical switchbacks, and lots of places to attack. This was the first race that they held call-ups for the C Men, and I was sitting in 7th overall after the first two races, so I had the luxury of being able to start on the front line - which I've learned is a big advantage in cross given how critical the starts are, especially with the big fields that have been showing up - this race had 65 guys line up. Anyway, we blew off the line and I hit the first runup hard, was sitting in 3rd or 4th at the top, and the first lap was all-out fast. By the second lap I could taste my breakfast coming up and decided that I wasn't going to be able to hold the pace of the leaders...so I was back and forth between about 3rd and 7th place most of the race. I was feeling pretty good with 3 laps to go and tried to up my pace just a bit, but mostly wanted to focus on not making any major mistakes or crashing out. Coming into the last lap I think I was in 4th - I hit the runup hard again, and as I mounted my bike at the top - damn! - kicked my chain off. Tough to maintain focus when you are so exhausted! I was able to get it back on pretty quickly, but lost about 15 seconds and two people passed me - I jumped back on and hammered hard, but there was no way I was going to catch them...so I ended up crossing the line in a sprint finish for 6th place. I was really hoping to get on the podium - oh well, maybe next time. The upside is that since I've been at all of the races in the series, my point totals put me in 5th overall after 3 of 5 races. I was able to stick around and watch the masters races and the elite men's race for the first time this year...very humbling wathcing those guys drop the hammer. See you in Golden Gate Park in a few weeks...

Reigning U.S. Cyclo-cross champ Katie Compton, ripped off!

Katie Compton's weekend was going great. This past Sunday October 29, she won Boulder Racing's UCI event in Boulder Colorado. She crossed the line with a 30-second advantage over Georgia Gould (Luna), the winner of the second Crankbrothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross. Not to mention that prior to the women's event Compton "warmed up" with the category 3 men. A final-lap crash was all that kept her off the podium in that race.

Compton’s custom Primus Mootrys were stolen Sunday night

Things went awry later in the evening after returning to her home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Both of her race bikes, four sets of race wheels and her husband's race bike were stolen out of the Spike Team van parked outside of the couple's house. The break-in was part of a string of three. Thieves also hit Mike Creed's (TIAA-CREF) car; nothing substantial was taken.

Spike Team sponsor, Raleigh is providing Compton with two bikes until her personal sponsor, Primus Mootry, can build new custom race bikes for her. If you come across any of the Comptons' stolen items, please contact the Colorado Springs Police department, 719-444-7000. The working case number is 06-36954.

Here is the list of what was taken:

Three custom built Primus Mootry cyclo-cross bikes, including

Compton's red, blue and white frame with airbrushed stars-and-stripes painted on the front end of the bike
Compton's new burgundy red frame
Her husband's 61cm silver bike features red flames on the front end of the bike.

Compton's bikes are equipped with:

Dura Ace shift components
FSA SLK carbon cranks
Crank Bros Eggbeater pedals
Cane Creek Carbon Aros 58 wheels, 1 set tubulars, 1 set clinchers
Cane Creek Carbon Volos wheels, carbon low profile
The tires were Tufo, Dugast and Michelin

The 61cm Silver Primus was equipped with a Campagnolo Chorus group and FSA SLK cranks, eggbeater pedals and Cane Creek wheels.

First Race Report - Surf City

My roadie teammate and I headed down to Watsonville for Surf City on Sunday. I had been to a few CX races before, but I never had a bike so I couldn't actually race one. Since i'm a complete noob and don't even own a MTB, I entered the Cs race and had a blast. Although still pretty new to the sport, my teammate has a half dozen races under his belt so I just followed his lead which worked out well. We sprinted for pole position at the whistle and then never relented puting on the pressure. In short order, there were only 3 of us - me, my teammate, and a guy from the Alan factory team (i'm assuming he came from a MTB background) with no one else in sight. I have to say, at this point, things are going pretty well.

Soon, however, my lack of skills started to show. I hit a 120 degree left hand turn on loose dirt and slid out, unclipped, stopped and then lost about 10 seconds on my teammate. It took awhile for me to get this back. Later, I was in the lead but I ran head on into a course marker and a ditch. Whoops. Eventually though, we dropped the Alan guy and then we were alone. My teammate continued to put on the pressure, but eventually he slowed on a fast, uphill, non-techinical section and I went hard. I was by myself for the last lap and then coasted through with the win. 1st and last race in the Cs for me I think. Will probably try my hand at the Bs next week. So much fun! Also, my teammate held on for 2nd place. I'm pretty sure i'm already hooked.

BASP Candlestick Race Report (C Men)

My second cross race - after 11th place in the first Pilarcitos race, I was intent on trying for top 10 at Candlestick. Great to be able to wake up, enjoy coffee and ride my bike to the race in a mere 20 minutes! The course was considerbly less bumpy than Hellyer, and despite a few tricky spots, not all that technical - mostly just flat fast grass and pavement, with some loose corners and sand thrown in for fun. I got a good warmup in, and by the time the C's fired off at 8:30 the sun was already up and hot...it was gonna be a scorcher and I was glad to be racing so early in the day. I had a better start at this race compared to he first, though it was still really chaotic, especially coming off the pavement into the first turn...the field was HUGE (70 riders), but luckily I got to the first set of barriers sitting somwhere around 15th. There was a pileup in front of me just beyond the first set of barriers, and I had to either bail from the bike or run some dude over - it ended up being a combination of the two. By the time I came to the start/finish area and into the second lap, my heart was already redlining! I decided to ease off just a bit for the next lap, was able to recover a little bit, and then settled into a good hard pace. The rest of the race was surprisingly smooth - I almost lost control in the gravel in one corner once, but other than that I felt very fluid. I think my major mistake was riding much of the race "alone" - dangling between the lead group and a big bunch of riders behind me - I probably should have made a better effort to catch that lead group...with two laps to go someone caught me from behind, so we played cat and mouse for awhile before I was able to shake him with 1/2 lap remaining - I crossed the line in 8th, exhausted. What a blast these races are - so glad the next one is also here in SF!

As many of you may have noticed, I haven't been to a single cross race this season. You may be wondering why. Did Barb get lazy and quit training? Did she finally have enough racing and decide to get on with her life? Did she join Earth First move undercover to a undisclosed location and begin a career as an eco terrorist?

OK I'm posting

Francesco's right. Jon does all the work. Now that it's CX season I'm checking this page for race reports photos and whatnot and it's all Jon. So here it goes. The season's off to a decent start for me. I'm racing Master's 35 + A's for the third year, again thanks to Jon's offer 3 years ago of a spot on the team and Bianchi deal. It's nice pick up where I left off--towards the bottom of the top ten. I'm in late season form: sickly and truly sore as hell.

I'm always interested in the usual stuff: race reports, photos, training--it's so varied, gear (a little) and such. On that note I switched to Paul's Brakes and although I could've bought 5 pairs of Avids for the price it's the single best improvement I've made. I can definitely go faster knowing I can modulate without just locking up. Longer cranks are nice too (from 170 to 172.5's--I'm short and ride a 52cm frame). Also I've been trying a single ring this year. I just commented on this on http://crossbabble.blogspot.com/ (see comments on Three Dot Lounge (top posting)). Jury's out on the single ring--I like it racing but training on long or really steep climbs is a bit trying. And the climb in Watsonville? I road it with at 38x27 (barely and not in a race) but the 42x27 seems out of reach. On the balance though it's probably worth the simplicity, less dropped chains (ideally) and aesthetic grace.

So every year I swear I'm going to train a bit more, but life steps in the way. I essentially run Tuesdays (20 min easy plus 6-10 hill repeats 45 sec (if no bike) 1 min. (with bike). One thing that's really helpful is making myself mount after each run. This is a truly miserable/wonderful routine. It really helps. And we're talking an hour total! Wednesdays it's 20-30 min. warm up, then 5 x 10 min. intervals at as close to my threshold (155-165) as possible. Mostly dirt, sometimes I run with the bike or attack if I'm lagging. Also for each effort I practice starting as if it's a race. Goofy, I know, but it really helps. I recover about 4 min. in-between. Often by the last one I'm out of gas or terrain. I finish this off with 30 min. of sweet UCSC singletrack and ride the RR tracks home. Usually about 2:15 riding. Sometimes (like last week) if I'm too beat up I just do the same interval routine on the road w/out the starts etc. That's it. An hour easy ride here or there, a 20 min. easy run instead (like today with my hip bugging me--another story) and it seems to work OK. Although I'd like to think with more (quantity and quality) training I could crack the top 5, but that' probably wishful thinking.

Alright, I've contributed. Tribe on...

Cheers, Brij

BASP Hellyer Race Report (C Men)

This was my first "real" race. I did a few of the DFL races last month, but BASP #1 at Hellyer was the first time I paid money to race my bike (kind of a weird concept, but worth it in the end)...

I live in SF - took Caltrain down on Saturday evening, met up with a friend from Palo Alto, we cruised around San Jose on our bikes (not my idea of a good time), and ended up renegade camping somewhere near Hellyer, woke up wet (we didn't bring a tent), packed our bags and headed over to the park around 7:00, brewed up some coffee and oatmeal, hydrated, changed in the bushes, and then registered and checked out the course real quick since we were racing the C men, which fired off at 8:30. Didn't have time for a proper warm-up, but at least we got a feel for how freakin bumpy the race was going to be.

Race Time! The start was chaotic, and I started way too far in the back - I need to work on staging further up next time...but I started moving up during the first lap, and then I just made that my goal every lap, to try to pick off a few guys. It seemed to work - I ended up 11th, which I was pretty happy with, and if I hadn't dropped my chain on the backside, I think I could've done even better. The course was much flatter and less technical than the DFL races, but was so bumpy that it was tough to get into any good pedaling rhythm...by the end, my wrists hurt more than my legs! I definitely have a lot of work to do in terms of smoothing out my dismounts, and especially with carrying the bike...there was only one short run-up, so I just pushed my bike up rather than shouldering it, but I know I'm gonna need to learn to huck it up some steeper run-ups in future races! The best part was that I came into the last velodrome lap with another guy, so we got to duke it out in a sprint to the line...very fun, especially since I beat him...

Looking foward to the next BASP, hopefully try to place a bit better (it is the Cs after all!)

I just moved to Bernal Heights, so my training right now consists of one running day per week and one riding day - both tend to involve some intervals on the hill heading up into Bernal Park, though with all the dog walking up there, it's not an ideal place to ride. Hopefully I'll find a new spot soon...

Me:

I'm a Cat3 roadie and first time CXer. I'm best at technical crits so i'm hoping my skills translate at least a little bit on the dirt. However, I haven't been in the dirt since I raced BMX as a 12 year old. That's a loooong time. Yikes!

I just bought a Blue Competition carbon CXC cross frame. This is, obviously, waaaay too much bike for me, but I found a crazy deal and am getting it for half price and built up with Campy Centaur. Very excited to to pay noob and get waxed by junior girls in the C races this season.

Anyone going to Tiki CX this year?

Bless all of you,
raymond

The new film from Scott Coady, that 'nutter' that brought you "The Tour baby"! has done it again. This time he follows MY favorite race, Paris Roubaix. The subject matter alone puts this film high on my list of films to see ASAP.

Well, it just so happens that they're are six days this November that will screen the California debut of "Cobbles Baby"! This will be a benefit for the NorCal High School Mountain Bike League, so don't miss it!

Continental

Yesterday, I reported on Focus's new ‘cross bike for Hanka Kupfernagel. The 2007 Focus Cross Team was equipped with a new tubular ‘cross tire from the famous German tire manufacturer, Continental. The same tire is also listed in the official specifications list in the 2007 Focus catalogue. The new tire looked intriguingly similar to a famous French tubular manufacturer, but yesterday I held my tongue until a bit more research could be done.

Rumor has it, one of the venues for the '06 series will include Hellyer (velodrome) park in San Jose.
I believe the last time there was 'cross race at Hellyer, was in the mid-nineties and Don Myrah (born in Oakland, California, was in 20th in '96 Olympics and national cyclocross champion), was still racing.
Special to VeloNews.com
This report filed January 28, 2006

The Dutch hosts wasted no time getting on the podium, with a win in the opening Junior Men's race at the Cyclo-cross World Championships in Zeddam. The appropriately named Boy van Poppel dropped the rest of the leaders to solo across the finish line in front of a cheering crowd. Bjorn Selander was the top U.S. finisher in seventh place.

On test: Reynolds Stratus cyclocross wheels, December 20, 2005

More tough mud-mashers

The cyclocross incarnation of Reynolds' mid-depth carbon fiber wheels uses a few more spokes to give it the strength for 'cross. Rob Karman finds it plenty tough enough but wishes for the holy grail of better braking.
This morning I reached into my bag of supplies and pulled out my last two Clif Shots, which means this must be my last race in the cyclo-cross motherland.

Helping U.S. 'crossers make the grade

How do USA's cyclo-cross riders get up to speed with their European counterparts? It's not easy, as results from the World's generally show. But cyclo-cross coach and English teacher Geoff Proctor is doing his bit to help the top Americans gain more experience by organising a European cyclo-cross camp in the depths of winter. Steve Medcroft reports on the initiative.

From cyclingnews:

At the Druivencross, one of the biggest cyclo-cross races in Belgium, eventual winner Bart Wellens (Fidea) hit out at a spectator who had been repeatedly insulting him. Although the jury was appalled and threatened to disqualify the rider, it was finally decided that he should keep the victory.

"For four laps, I had mud and beer thrown at me," Wellens told Belgian Cyclo-cross.info. "The fifth time it was just too much for me. I didn't really intend to hit him, and I regret what I've done, but I think that as a rider I don't have to put up with everything."

Japan Cyclocross Championships - CN

Sakai, Japan, December 11, 2005

The 11th Japanese Cyclocross Championships were held in conjunction with the fourth round of the Kansai Series, in the city of Sakai. The slightly surreal race venue was an oceanside park on a man-made island in Osaka harbour, surrounded by factories and garbage incineration plants. With slightly cloudy and cool conditions, 53 riders toed the line for the elite men's start.

There was no shortage of themes to come out of the second day of the 2005 Liberty Mutual U.S. Cyclo-cross National Championships in Providence, Rhode Island. On a day when, among others, collegiate men, under-23 men, junior men 17-18 and elite men all raced for stars-and-stripes jerseys, there was a handful of constants overlapping the day's most prestigious races.
In the perfect send off to what has been a cyclo-cross series with its fair share of bad weather and challenging conditions, the Caster's Grand Prix, run Sunday in Warwick, Rhode Island as the final round of the 2005 Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series, presented racers with the most challenging conditions yet, a lethal combination of fresh snow, freezing temperatures, and even sleet. But if the race day conditions seemed utterly miserable and treacherous to most riders, they were the perfect storm for noted bad weather specialist Tim Johnson (Cyclocrossworld.com-Louis Garneau) who entered the day as Series leader.

Carbon fiber wheels sound like a good way to throw money at a cross bike with little return. Not so, says Rob Karman, who is impressed with Zipp's carbon hoops.

Barbarella: The Barbara Howe diary

Just as Barbarella bumps through the universe, comically oblivious to the dangers and threats being thrust at her, Barbara Howe has had a few misadventures of her own. But with a stable team and strong results in recent years, the 29 year-old Velo Bella rider looks set to navigate her way to the top of the US 'cross tree, where she hopes to be crowned 'Queen of the 'cross Galaxy'.
